Despite the struggle of online classes, more than 2,000 students in Malolos received scholarship grants last May 18 to 25 from the City Government of Malolos across 50 barangays with the majority coming from Mojon.

As part of the “City Government of Malolos Scholarship Distribution Grant For 2nd Semester, S.Y 2020-2021,” the City Government gave grants and benefits to 2,305 students in Malolos. The local government visited each barangay for students to apply and receive their benefits from their locations.

These 2,305 scholars came from 51 barangays all over the city. Most came from Barangay Mojon which has 638 scholars while Barangay Panasahan only has 177 scholars as of May 25.

“I study in Marcelo [Marcelo H. Del Pilar National High School] and I have been a scholar since 2020. I receive financial assistance from the City Hall and it helps me to buy school materials and things needed without asking for my parent’s money.” Dyra Victoria, a Grade 11 Scholar from Barangay San Vicente, said.

Victoria also stated that she wishes to become an architect and the benefits she received will help her buy her school needs.

Along with the local government scholarship grants, Barangay Longos also give their own grants to students in their barangay in exchange for their participation in tree planting efforts around Malolos. 101 students from Barangay Longos received benefits such as financial assistance of P1,500 and pocket Wi-Fi for students who are currently attending online classes.

“We have our own kind of process – we want to do something productive sa mga scholars namin – Magte-take sila ng exam – about sa history ng Malolos – If nakapasa sila then pupunta sila to get the tree seedlings na magiging part ng kanilang journey through our scholarship,” Longos Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman Miel Agustin stated.

Agustin added that students under their scholarship grant must maintain a general weighted average (GWA) of 2.25 and up. A GWA of 5 or incomplete grades are not eligible for their scholarship grants. Like the city government, Barangay Longos only accepts scholars from senior high school to college.
